Rhode Island / Eastern Connecticut is getting our first snow storm of the season. Schools were closed for the day, businesses were closed, even banks closed by 2 or 3PM, even though it's the day they stay open. This is not a major storm, but it's been snowing 2-3 inches per hour, and so far in northern parts of the state they have about 9 inches. The DOT has not been able to keep up with sanding, salting, and plowing. It took me about 2 hours to make a 20 mile trip this morning. There are cars in ditches everywhere, and many cars are stuck right on the roadways. Rescue vehicles can’t get through, cars are running out of gas, and some roads are parking lots, including RT 95.
Actually the drivers were the worst problem! It seems like every idiot in the world picked today to learn how to drive. There was a car trying to go up a hill and he was going sideways. I was going the other direction, and was over as far as safely possible. He had recently passed a 2 car accident, that had traffic going about 3 MPH on my side of the road. Other drivers, apparently in a hurry to get in an accident themselves, were passing him on the right on a two lane country road with heavy traffic both ways. Even an idiotic Casino bus passed him, almost sliding into him. I had a great view of it because if the bus had hit the car, the car would have hit me.
Then I had to get on a "divided highway" that was one lane each way. The one lane onramp was a sharp 280 turn, so I had slowed down to about 15. (Speed limit was only 25). Even at that I was sliding a bit. This idiot behind me wasn't pleased that I was going so slowly (although all morning I was keeping up and in some safe areas passing other cars). He kept trying to pass me on the onramp! Then when we got on the "highway", I was doing 30 because there was a pick up truck in front of me. This car was tailgating me and swerving left and right trying to figure out how to pass me! Ok, so he had 4 wheel drive. But I bet his brakes were no better than anyone else’s!!! Easy to go, impossible to stop fast.
So I'm very relieved to be sitting home finally, with my Christmas tree lit and a fire crackling, looking at the pictures I took while stuck in traffic. And yes, it is "beginning to look a lot like Christmas!"
Ho Ho Ho!
Wish I were in Hawaii!!!!
